• Color accuracy: Converting to PNG or TIFF maintains the original RGB colors. Converting to JPG, however, applies lossy compression. It will slightly smooth fine transitions between colors, which is adequate for use on the web but not ideal for color-critical tasks.
• Bit depth: PPM files can store either 8-bit or 16-bit color depth per channel. PNG and TIFF keep that precision, whereas JPG usually reduces it to 8-bit.
• Image precision: PPM files store exact pixel values, so any format that applies compression, for example, JPG and WebP, will slightly alter pixel information. PNG and TIFF are thus recommended over JPG for scientific, texture, or rendering purposes.

PPM, PGM, and PBM belong to the same Netpbm family of file formats, but each handles different types of image data:

• PPM (Portable Pixmap) stores color images with full RGB values for each pixel;
• PGM (Portable Graymap) stores grayscale images with brightness levels from back to white;
• PBM (Portable Bitmap) stores black-and-white images with just two values: on and off (1-bit).
