What is DNG Format?

DNG is not an everyday image file like JPG or PNG. It was designed by Adobe as a specific type of RAW photo format. Unlike JPGs, DNGs preserve all the details captured by your camera sensor after pressing the shutter. It doesn’t process and save a finished image, but just an untouched photo. That’s actually where the name DNG comes from (Digital Negative). It’s the digital version of a film negative.

Adobe developed the DNG format mainly because each camera brand had its own proprietary RAW format. For example, Nikon has NEF, Canon has CR2 and CR3, and Sony has ARW. However, not all software can read all of these files, and some may become outdated years after new camera models are released.
