You would consider converting an MP4 file to AVI when you need your video to work with older devices or video software that are not compatible with MP4 natively. While MP4 is the modern standard, many outdated systems and offline players only recognize formats like AVI, WMV, or MPG.

For example, older versions of Windows Movie Maker, VirtualDub, Sony Vegas Pro, or Adobe Premiere (CS-era) work better with AVI. Some TVs, DVD players, retro consoles, car media systems, and industrial displays only accept AVI from a USB drive. For the audio, the answer is not always. AVI supports fewer audio formats than MP4, so the original audio will usually be re-encoded during conversion.
